Background & History
Direct Route (Limerick) Ltd. signed a Public Private Partnership (PPP) agreement with the National Roads Authority (NRA) on the 18th August 2006 for the construction, operation and maintenance of the Limerick Tunnel.The Government's Transport21 plan which was announced in November, 2005 is a €34.4 billion blueprint for the continued development of Ireland's land, sea and air transport infrastructure over the next decade. This level of financial commitment by the Government will enable the Authority to plan ahead with the confidence for the accelerated development of the national road network. The Transport21 plan will see €9.4 million invested everyday for the next 10 years in Irish transport. The Government set a target of securing €1.27 billion of private finance for these projects which represents 23% of the total investment program. The vehicle for securing private investment is the the Public Private Partnership Schemes (PPP).
